Whether you're a recent graduate or a seasoned professional, earning your master's degree can provide a number of opportunities to advance your career, sharpen your skill set and help you stand out in a competitive job market.
In fact, in fields such as business, education, healthcare and STEM advanced degrees are no longer an option – they’re essential. Employers are placing greater emphasis on top talent who can enter a role and make an immediate impact. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, jobs requiring a master's degree are expected to increase by 15% through 2029.1 As a result, a growing number of working adults are going back to school to earn their master’s.
From building skills employers want to see to increasing your earning potential and moving up in your field, a master's degree can have lasting benefits on you and your career.
Enhance your skills
With courses that dive deep into your area of study, hands-on experience designed to prepare you for the field and instructors with real-world expertise, SNHU's master's degree programs can help you develop a specialized set of skills employers are looking for. You'll become the subject matter expert in the field of your choice, making you that much more competitive in your field.
Pursuing your master's degree is also a great way for current working professionals to keep up in your industry, and ensure your skills are timely and relevant.
1. Boost earning potential
There's a lot of value in getting your master's degree - and we're not just talking professionally. Having your master's can increase your earning potential in a wide range of industries. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, master's degree holders earned an average of almost 20% more in their weekly earnings than bachelor's degree holders in 2020.1 That means, on average, master's degree holders made $12,000 more in annual salary than bachelor's degree holders.1
2. Prepare for your future
For many industries, a bachelor's degree just doesn't cut it anymore. The BLS predicts a 15% increase in jobs requiring a master's degree through 2029, while jobs requiring a bachelor's degree are only set to grow by 6.4%.1 As more and more employers look for job candidates with master's degrees, continuing your education could help your resume stand out and create more opportunity in your career.
These figures signal big challenges for those who have yet to earn a graduate degree – and not just at the entry level. As SNHU graduate Lisa Kpotie'16can attest, even seasoned job seekers with years of experience need continued education to go further.
“I started to realize that in order to be more marketable in my field, I needed to go back to school,” she said. Now, thanks to the MS Accounting degree program at SNHU, she’s taken her career to the next level.
“Getting my master’s … allowed me to branch out and open my own [business].”
Not only does a master's degree help open doors in your career - it can also help you reduce the likelihood of unemployment. In 2020, the BLS reported a 4.1% unemployment rate for those who earned their master’s.1On the other hand, the BLS reported a 5.5% unemployment rate for bachelor's degree holders and a rate of 8.3% for those without a degree.
3. Fulfill your dream
Earning potential, future planning and increased employment opportunities aren’t the only possible benefits of earning a master’s. For some, the sense of personal fulfillment is also key.
Jessica Cooper ’14 is one such case. As a veteran and military spouse, her decision to go back wasn’t only for herself – it was for the people she cared about.
“I was the first in my family to ever obtain a degree of any kind,” she said. “I never in a million years dreamed I would [earn an MBA], but I’m so glad I did it.”
